How to Understand eBay Fashion Size Standards

 Overview

eBay requires standardized size values for Fashion listings, including Apparel and Footwear. This article explains how to choose an accepted Size and Size Type, how to handle brand-specific sizing, and how to fix listings that fail or are hidden because eBay cannot match the size information.

Use this guidance when creating or revising Fashion listings in Lister, especially when an item uses unusual brand sizing, a custom size description, or a Size and Size Type combination that eBay does not accept.

Before You Begin

  • eBay's accepted size values vary by category, brand, eBay site, and in the US, Size Type
  • The value printed on the garment is useful information, but it is not always a valid eBay Size value
  • When eBay provides a standard value for the category, use that value in the required Size field
  • Keep brand-specific sizing, tagged size, measurements, and fit notes in the title, description, photos, or optional item specifics when needed
  • Do not use descriptive text such as See photos, See description, Measurements, or similar phrases as the required Size value

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Identify the correct Category
  1. Confirm the item is assigned to the correct Fashion category
  2. Use the most specific category available for the item

The category matters because eBay's supported Size values are defined at the category level. A size that is valid for one type of Fashion item may not be accepted for another.

2. Identify the item's actual tagged or manufacturer size
  1. Check the garment label, shoe marking, packaging, or manufacturer's size information
  2. Record the original brand size before converting it
  3. Capture measurements when they will help confirm fit or resolve unusual sizing

Examples of useful measurements include waist, inseam, chest, bust, length, sleeve, or shoe measurements.

3. Select the appropriate Size Type

When the category requires Size Type, choose the value that correctly describes the sizing system for the item.

Common examples include:

  • Regular
  • Plus
  • Juniors
  • Petites
  • Big & Tall

Do not select a Size Type simply because it seems close to the tagged size. The Size Type and Size must be a valid combination accepted by eBay.

Women's sizing examples
  • Odd-numbered women's sizes such as 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 are generally associated with Juniors sizing
  • Standard even-numbered women's sizes such as 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, along with common alpha sizes such as S, M, L, XL, are generally associated with Regular sizing
  • XL should not automatically be treated as Plus sizing and usually falls under Regular. Plus sizing begins with supported plus-size values and varies by category

Always use the values eBay makes available for that specific category

4. Choose the closest supported Size
  1. Review the available standardized Size values
  2. Select the supported value that best represents the item
  3. If the exact branded or tagged size is available, use it
  4. If it is not available, select the closest supported eBay size
  5. Add the original brand size and any useful fit details elsewhere in the listing

For example, if a brand uses a proprietary numerical scale that eBay does not support, select the closest alpha or numeric standard size and preserve the original brand size in the description or optional item specifics.

⚠️Important Note: Brand sizing may require research. Many brands map easily to standard sizes, but some brands use proprietary systems.

Chico's is a common example. When the brand's size does not clearly map to an eBay value, check the brand's current or historical size chart and use measurements when available before choosing the closest supported standard size.

5. Preserve the original size information

If the standardized Size does not fully describe the item:

  1. Add the tagged or manufacturer size to the description
  2. Add measurements when useful
  3. Add fit notes such as runs small, oversized, slim fit, or hemmed when they are known and accurate
  4. Use optional item specifics when an appropriate field is available
  5. Include a clear photo of the size tag when possible

The standardized Size helps eBay categorize and filter the listing. The additional information helps the buyer understand the actual item

6. Save and list the item
  1. Save the updated Size and Size Type
  2. Submit the listing to eBay
  3. Confirm the item reaches Listed status

If the listing fails and ends up in Attention Required, open the listing and review the eBay error before making another change.

What to Expect

eBay may automatically convert some familiar size values to its preferred format. For example, a value such as Small may be normalized to S.

For values eBay cannot confidently map, the listing may fail, be placed on hold, or be hidden from buyers until the Size is corrected. Existing Good 'Til Cancelled listings can also remain hidden from search until an accepted standardized value is selected.

You may occasionally see a different size representation in Lister than what eBay displays while normalization is occurring. The eBay value is the marketplace value buyers see.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

My listing says the Size is invalid or unsupported
  1. Confirm the listing is in the correct Category
  2. Remove custom text from the required Size field
  3. Select one of eBay's supported Size values
  4. Confirm Size Type and Size form a valid combination
  5. Save and relist

Values such as See description, See images, Measurements, or a sentence describing fit should not be used as the required standardized Size.

The tagged brand size is not available in eBay

Choose the supported size that best represents the item, then include the actual branded size in the description, photos, measurements, or optional item specifics.

Do not invent a new Size value to reproduce the brand label exactly.

The brand uses unusual sizing, such as Chico's

Research the brand's size conversion before selecting an eBay Size.

Use, in order:

  1. The manufacturer's size chart when available
  2. Reliable historical brand size charts for discontinued or vintage sizing
  3. The item's actual measurements, converted to the standard alpha or numeric size
  4. The closest eBay-supported size that accurately represents the item

Include the original tagged size in the listing so the buyer can see both the brand's size and the standardized marketplace size

My Size looks correct, but the listing still fails

  • Check Size Type. A valid Size can still fail when it is paired with an incompatible Size Type

  • For example, a standard size paired with Plus when eBay treats that size as Regular can cause the combination to be rejected

The item was listed before, so why is it failing now?

eBay rolled out Fashion size standardization in stages during summer of 2026. Earlier listings could contain custom or non-standard values that were accepted before enforcement.

When those listings are revised, relisted, or revalidated, eBay will now require the Size to match the current standardized values

eBay changed my Size automatically

eBay may normalize a common value when it can confidently identify an equivalent. For example, Medium will become M

Review the standardized value to make sure it still represents the item. If it does not, select a different supported value and add additional sizing details elsewhere in the listing description

The item only has measurements and no readable size tag

  • Use the measurements and the most reliable sizing reference available to determine the closest supported standard size

  • Add the measurements to the listing so buyers can make their own fit decision

  • Do not enter the measurements themselves into the required Size field. Instead, lay the garment flat without stretching it. For bottoms, measure straight across the waist. For tops, jackets, and dresses, measure armpit to armpit across the chest. Multiply the flat measurement by 2 to estimate the full waist or chest circumference, then compare that measurement with the brand’s size chart or another reliable sizing chart to determine the closest alpha size, such as S, M, or L, or numeric size

    • For example, a shirt measuring 20 inches armpit to armpit has an approximate 40-inch chest circumference. Use the appropriate size chart to determine which standardized size most closely corresponds to that measurement

  • Because sizing varies by brand, use the manufacturer’s size chart when available. Keep the actual measurements in the listing so buyers can evaluate fit for themselves

What size should I use for bags, wallets, or similar accessories?

  • Use only the Size options eBay provides for that item's category

  • Only fill in Required sizing fields

  • Some accessory categories use general values such as Small, Medium, Large, or One Size instead of apparel-style numeric sizing. Do not assume apparel sizing rules apply to accessories

    • For example, if a handbag measures 12 inches wide, do not use 12 or 12 in as its Size. Select the appropriate standardized Size, such as Small, Medium, or Large, and include the handbag’s actual dimensions in the description 

  • No. Once the listing has been corrected to meet eBay's current requirements, continue using a supported standardized value.

  • Changing the required Size back to a custom or unsupported value can cause the listing to fail or become hidden again.

I corrected the Size, but eBay still will not relist the item

Check the eBay error. If you see 21920397 or wording that the listing was removed for violating the Fashion Size Standardization policy, the item may already be under an eBay policy hold.

  1. Confirm the required Size and Size Type now use supported eBay values
  2. Open eBay Seller Hub and check the Issue Resolution Center
  3. Review the options eBay provides for that listing
  4. If eBay offers an appeal and the sizing has already been corrected, follow the appeal process and explain that the item now uses an accepted standardized size
  5. Contact Upright Support before deleting, duplicating, or otherwise rebuilding an item that is actively progressing through a listing strategy, since changing the listing chain can affect strategy progression

A policy-held or removed listing may require action on the eBay side even after its product data has been corrected.

When to Contact Support

Contact Upright Support if:

  • The listing still fails after you select a Size and Size Type that eBay supports for the category and you are unable to correct it
  • Lister does not display an eBay-supported value that should be available for the selected category
  • The listing shows a size-related error that does not identify which field needs to be corrected
  • The size displayed in Lister and the size returned by eBay appear to conflict in a way that prevents the listing from being resolved

When contacting Support, include:

  • The product or listing ID
  • The Category
  • The tagged or manufacturer size
  • The Size and Size Type you selected
