Overview
This document outlines the required and strongly recommended equipment and supplies needed to use each core function of Upright Lister and Upright Link.
Table of Contents
Upright Lister runs in the web browser on any internet-connected tablet, laptop, or desktop computer. We recommend the following minimum system specs:
Windows
- Operating System: Any device capable of running Windows 10 or higher will support Lister
- Recommended Browsers: Chrome (preferred), Firefox, Microsoft Edge
- RAM: We recommend a minimum of 16GB for any device downloading and viewing reports in Excel or other spreadsheet program
Mac OS
- Operating System: Any device capable of running MacOS 11 or higher will support Lister
- Recommended Browsers: Chrome (preferred), Firefox, Safari
- RAM: We recommend a minimum of 16GB for any device downloading and viewing reports in Excel or other spreadsheet program
Upright Link is capable of running on any iOS device capable of running iOS 13+.
- We recommend purchasing on Apple, if available, as it comes with a 1-year warranty. Walmart, Best Buy, and Amazon are suitable alternatives
- We recommend newer versions of the iPhone for photography, as they will take better-quality pictures
Upright Link is supported on Android 8.1+ or later devices with a minimum of 1 GB of memory.
Label printers are used to print manifest barcodes, inventory location barcodes, product barcodes, and shipping labels. Lister Connect will need to be installed on each workstation used to print barcodes and shipping labels.
The following are all supported label printer brands and models.
💡 Suggested DPI: Upright Labs recommends using the 203 dpi version of printers for optimal performance. While higher dpi printers are compatible, please note that both shipping labels and product barcode labels will print smaller than their intended size with these models.
- Zebra GK420d (recommended!)
- Zebra GK420T
- Zebra ZD421d
- Zebra ZD421
- Zebra ZD421 203 dpi Standard size, able to print all labels
- Zebra ZP450
- ZP450s that have been provided by and are branded with the "UPS" logo are designed only to print shipping labels and will not print product barcodes or inventory labels in Lister
- Zebra ZD620
- Zebra ZD621
- Zebra ZD220 (not recommended)
- The 220 series from Zebra has a slower print time than later models, resulting in 4-5 second pauses when printing individual labels
- Zebra ZD411 203 dpi (not recommended)
- The ZD411 is a smaller printer that ONLY prints inventory and item labels
- Dymo 4XL
- Dymo 450 Turbo
- Dymo 550 LabelWriter (not recommended)
- The 550 series from Dymo uses proprietary DRM labels with RFID chips that are only available from Dymo. Other (often cheaper) brands of labels will not work with these printers!
- STAR TSP 700
- STAR TSP 700II
- EPSON M244A
❗ The following printers are not supported.
- Zebra ZP505
- Dymo 450 Twin Turbo
💡 Operational Tip: The Zebra GK420d is the recommended printer for both barcodes and shipping labels for build quality, performance, and ease of maintenance.
Although this printer is discontinued, Lister still supports it, as the printer drivers used in Lister are maintained by Seagull Scientific, not Zebra!
Upright Labs recommends purchasing 1-1/8" x 3-1/2" labels from Labels Direct or from Uline. As a note, the description mentions these are only compatible with Dymo printers, but these labels are compatible with Zebra printers.
This size label is used for three purposes:
- Printing inventory location barcode labels (done once during the initial transition to Lister and on an as-needed basis if inventory barcode labels become damaged)
- Printing Product barcode labels (done on an ongoing basis)
- Optional: Used at retail stores to print Manifest barcode labels instead of Manifest sheets
Barcode label rolls must be in the portrait orientation, with the short side feeding out. Landscape orientation labels with the long side feeding out are not compatible with Lister.
If you see a lot of black dashes on the back of your barcode labels, this will likely cause issues when trying to print. The black lines are used by the printer to determine where the label should stop and cause conflicts when printing barcode labels.
This size label is used to print all shipping labels for outgoing orders.

Upright Labs recommends purchasing 4"x6" labels from Labels Direct or from Uline, or working with your FedEx or UPS representative to order labels directly from your carrier
Digital USB scales are used to import item weights while listing products and weighing packages for outbound shipments. Lister Connect will need to be installed in each workstation that uses USB scales
-
All USB Mettler Toledo (recommended) and Dymo scales are supported
💡Operational Tip: We recommend purchasing scales that do not have an auto-off feature. Certain models of USB scales automatically power off after a few minutes, meaning a teammate will need to frequently restart the scale and reconnect it to Lister Connect.
As barcode scanning is integral to optimizing your workflow, barcode scanners are required for every workstation that uses Upright Lister.
-
Any 1D or 2D barcode scanner will work, but this one is well-rated online and by our clients!
Ring barcode scanners connect to Link via Bluetooth can significantly increase the speed of scanning barcodes vs. using the built-in camera of your iOS device.
Ring barcode scanners do not need time to register a scan, unlike the built-in iOS camera scanner, which needs time to focus and bright light to read barcodes.
We recommend one of the following scanners for each device running Link:
